Blue Devil Sports Medicine and Athletic Training
The Blue Devil Sports Medicine Program was established in 2000 when Chris King ATC was brought on board. After spending 7 years at Pinson Valley High School, King came in and established the program and begin coordinating not only the care of the student athletes but the recruiting for a Student Athletic Training Program. Since then, students at MJHS, as well as North Jefferson Middle School, have had the opportunity to learn about sports medicine and other medical careers as possibilities for their own futures. In over 20 years at both schools, students have graduated into various medical careers. Careers such as nursing, emergency care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other professions have been obtained by alumni of this program. We are especially proud of the 6 alumni that have become Certified Athletic Trainers and work in the world of sports medicine in hospitals, high schools, and universities today. In 2014, we added Jeremy Free ATC, as our new Assistant Athletic Trainer. For the last 10 years, we have been training our student athletic trainers as Licensed First Responders, thanks to our local fire department's support and the Birmingham Regional Emergency Medical Services System (BREMSS). Our school nurse, Tracy Love RN, is also a vital part of our care provided to our student-athletes. She is a tremendous asset to our Sports Medicine Program and we work very well as a team in the care of athletes and students as well.
